I had this same problem with my 1969 MGB at the MG Nationals.

Laurie Steer made up a small tool, from a piece of metal about 50mm wide and 25 cm long.  He looked at another MGB boot and shaped the tool to slide along from the outer edge of the boot lid. Some effort to lift the boot lid, lucky I have a luggage rack, helped.

The tool worked and the boot opened with no damage.  Kiwi ingenuity prevailed.

Tool now lives under the seat. Maybe to use on another MGers car.
