Tangiwai Rail Disaster Memorial Unveiling on Sunday 13 March 2016
Three MGB Roadsters, a BGT and an MGF gathered at Mangaweka Campground for morning tea and then made a colourful and attractive little convoy for the journey to Tangiwai on a beautiful Autumn day. A large crowd including many relatives and descendants of victims and survivors of the enormous rail tragedy on Christmas Eve 1953 gathered at mid-day on the site. The event, well organised and managed by Ohakune Lions Club, culminated with the unveiling of a stone memorial listing the names of the 151 who died that night. When the quite moving ceremony was over the MG'ers travelled back to Awastone Riverside Haven at Mangaweka to enjoy the 'Sunday Session' evening with food and live music held weekly there during Summer. This provided a very pleasant finish to a truly memorable day. Check out the gallery photos too. |
